Maybe interested in joining? Great! It’s fun and great exercise! Here’s a little background:
Who can join? Besides being 16 years or older, there are few requirements for anyone wanting to join. Prior dance experience of any sort is certainly not needed – some of us had extensive previous dance experience, though not always Irish, and some had none at all. Just having a desire to learn and the physical health to try it is all we ask from beginners. As we are strictly an adult group, if you have a dancer who is under 16 years of age who is interested in formal training, please contact the Richens Timm Academy for information on lessons.
What is the process like? In a nutshell, new members are brought in initially as trainees (In-Training) where they are taught beginning steps and beginning level dances, both softshoe and hardshoe. Once a trainee is proficient in at least 3 beginning dances, they may be invited to start participating in performances. When a trainee performs for the first time they become Active Members. For anyone who does not wish to perform, an Associate membership level is an option (more to follow).
What do I need to bring to class as a trainee? Comfortable workout clothing, lightweight tennis shoes, a water bottle, and your enthusiasm are all you need to get started! As your skills and interest grow, however, we do encourage you to consider getting the Irish dance shoes, especially the hardshoes as they are somewhat unique (more on that later).
Where and when do we rehearse? Trainee/beginner classes are held from 6-7 pm Tuesday nights at The Riviera Club. The next Trainee class begins September 10, 2024. The ensemble practices regularly Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Trainees are always welcome to attend these rehearsals, but it is not mandatory. Tuesday 7-8:45pm & Saturday 10-12 noon The Riviera Club – 5640 N Illinois St, Indianapolis, IN 46208
How much does it cost? Celtic Motion has membership dues based upon the level of commitment. These fees go directly towards maintaining the group, paying for rehearsal space rental, sound equipment, advertising costs, and website fees.
Levels of Membership: Active – Individuals desiring to perform with the group. Associate – Individuals who do not desire or have the time commitment to perform but enjoy learning Irish dance and want to be a part of the group for social and exercise benefits. Trainee – Individuals who are interested in joining Celtic Motion and are in the process of learning the group's repertoire. Trainees will come to special classes geared to their learning ability. After learning a series of beginner level dances, trainees may be invited to join as an Active or Associate member.
Current Annual Dues: Active (performing) members – $200 Associate (non-performing) members – $100 Trainees - $50 for 7-week session or $60 for 8-week session
Other costs: As a beginner, sneakers or other types of dance shoes (e.g. tap) can easily cover your needs. Active performing members are required to purchase both soft and hard Irish dance shoes. Soft shoes typically run from $35-75, and hard shoes typically run from $80-150. Please see our links page for vendors that sell Irish dance gear, or feel free to ask any one of our dancers for advice! Active members are also required to purchase all current costumes. Associate members have no additional costs.
